For years Allen Craig has been an intriguing prospect in the minor leagues because of his ability to swing the bat and hit for power. In 2009, Craig bopped 26 home runs for AAA Memphis.
Craig does have one problem though. Defense is not his strong suit.
A former third baseman turned outfielder because of a shaky glove, Craig says he is preparing himself to be an option off the bench at third base.
"It's pretty clear that David (Freese) is the starter at third," Craig said. "I go in there as a backup plan. But it will enhance my chances for at-bats. I think that's beneficial."
Craig hit just .246 with 4 home runs in 2010, but only received 123 plate appearances. But, Craig did show flashes of power with 7 doubles and 18 RBI's in his limited time.
If Craig can be dependable enough to play third in a back up role it will do wonders to solidify the bench and add depth to a Cardinals infield that is lacking an impact bat at positions that Albert Pujols does not play.
Craig knows that his role on the team is going to be as a bench player, whether in the outfield, at third, or just as a pinch-hitting specialist.
"I definitely have the ability to be a pinch-hitter," Craig said. "It's still the game."
