Cardinals Sign Nick Punto

Nick Punto is the type of gritty player that Cardinals' fans adore
The St. Louis Cardinals likely made their last off season move on Friday when they signed former Minnesota Twins utility infielder Nick Punto to a one year contract that will pay him $750,000.

Punto hit .238 in 88 games for the Minnesota Twins while playing second base, third base, and shortstop.  Punto swiped 6 bases, hit one home run, and had 20 RBI's for the AL Central Champion Twins.

St. Louis Cardinals general manager John Mozeliak is excited about the flexibility that Punto adds to the ball club, specifically Punto's proven track record and ability to play third base.

David Freese, who was impressive in just 70 games for the Cardinals in 2010,

"And overall our hope is that David Freese is going to be our everyday third baseman, but if there is a problem there, we certainly know this man is capable of playing there every day."

Punto's signing likely means that either Daniel Descalso or Tyler Greene will be left off the big league roster in 2011.

The career Minnesota Twin is excited to be a Cardinal, according to Mozeliak.

"Nick's thrilled about coming here. I always think when people show this kind of interest, it's always beneficial to the club." is rehabbing from serious ankle surgery.  Punto provides the organization protection at the position.
