How come every other team in baseball can give their best players contract extensions, but the Cardinals can't seem to muster a no-brainer contract extension together with the best player in baseball?
The Cincinnati Reds have no problem giving the reigning National League Most Valuable Player Joey Votto a 3 year, $38 million contract extension.
The Colorado Rockies secured their stud outfielder Carlos Gonzalez when they inked him to a 7 year, $80 million contract extension. The Rockies also managed to get their shortstop Troy Tulowitzki signed to a $157.75 million contract.
Last season, the Minnesota Twins had no problem giving the face of their franchise Joe Mauer a beautiful $184 million deal.
So why can every other team lock up their prized possessions? Why can't the Cardinals get this done with Pujols?
Now Pujols has basically given the organization an ultimatum that a contract better be done before the start of spring training or he'll be testing the free agent markets after the season.
Here's a bit of advice. Don't try and call his bluff.
If Pujols isn't inked by spring training, I'm sorry, but he is gone and you might as well start talk of "The Curse of Pujols" because if Albert puts on another uniform this franchise will never be the same.
This organization may not be able to afford what "El Hombre" is worth.
But it will be more expensive if nothing gets done.
