60 Second Rant: Good For Baylor

During the past several months every member of the Big 12 has sat idly and watched as Texas A&M publicly defected from the Big 12 Conference.  The remaining members of the Big 12 let Texas A&M go without much of a fight, that is, until now.

On Wednesday the SEC unanimously voted to accept Texas A&M as its 13th member with the exception that every Big 12 member school would waive their rights to contractual litigation against the Aggies.

The Baylor Bears have rallied 8 of the 9 schools left in the conference to take what will likely be a last stand.  Only one school, Oklahoma, waived their right to litigation while the other schools in the Big 12, including Mizzou, did not waive that right and thus held up the Aggies official move to the SEC.

According to ESPN sources, Baylor is being referred to as "the ringleader" and Texas A&M feels as though they are "being held hostage."

Good for Baylor.

Who would have thought that it would be little Baylor University out of Waco, Texas that would make a stand and really try to salvage the Big 12 Conference.

Sure the move likely will not "save" the Big 12, but it will delay the cascading demise of the conference while its remaining members negotiate and do what they can to join other conferences or form a new one.

No it was not the mighty Texas Longhorns or the Oklahoma Sooners who stood up to A&M.  It wasn't even basketball power Kansas or the local Missouri Tigers.

It was the Baylor Bears who are making a stand and lead the charge in keeping the Big 12 Conference together.

Who can blame them?  If the Big 12 collapses Baylor will likely be left without a home in a major conference.

But at least they have the gall to rally the troops and make a stand, even if it just slows the painful death of the Big 12 Conference.

  1. Baylor is a JOKE.This is a useless, hateful reaction from a hypocritical institution. This university had no problem in the past discarding its long held rivalries when it wanted to change conferences for financial gain.I hope they enjoy the WAC or lower, when it all shakes out, most conferences would not have them.

  2. Must be nice from where you're sitting, considering Bama's good fortune. Imagine if Bama was in this position. I guarantee you they'd do the same thing. All BU did was not waive their rights to sue. Don't be ignorant; there's enough of you already.

  3. I'm an Aggie, and I'm eager for A&M to join the SEC. Having said that, I don't blame Baylor or any of the other schools that might try to use the courts as a last resort to save their major conference status. They're trying to survive. But prolonged and bitter disputes will probably cut any future scheduling between the teams--a loss to us all.

  4. Why should Baylor give up their right to litigation.A&M would not give up their right to litigation is is was Texas leaving!A&M should pay all the remaining schools for any financial losses such as TV contracts, ticket sales and revenues that would be lost. They chose to leave the conference.
