St. Louis Cardinals trade rumors: David Price is and should be on team's radar

On Sunday afternoon, less than 24 hours after starter Joe Kelly matched the longest outing of his career, news surfaced that the St. Louis Cardinals are taking serious interest in acquiring David Price.

Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch also addressed the issue, adding further proof that the Cardinals are doing their due diligence in a possibly pursuit of the hard-throwing, left-handed ace.

The Cardinals are right to be in pursuit of David Price for several reasons in my opinion and the fact that general manager John Mozeliak is gathering said info on Price signals that he has some of the same worries as I do going forward.  Here is why trading for Price, rather than a hitter like Giancarlo Stanton, is the right move and should be on the team's radar.

We do not know if Michael Wacha will ever return. The team has been mum on his status and if the Cardinals are pursuing Price, I view it as a signal that Wacha may not be in the Cards the rest of the way.

You have to have two aces to compete in the playoffs.  Cardinals fans understand how difficult it is to face Clayton Kershaw and Zach Greinke in the playoffs.  Imgaine what other fan bases would feel if they had to face Adam Wainwright and Price in a short series.  Good luck..

Price will help Waino eat innings and protect the bullpen. Kelly went seven strong yesterday, but how often will he be able to duplicate that?  Answer: not often.  Lance Lynn has shown that he can go seven strong in about three out of five outings or so, but that still is not often enough and with a young bullpen that has struggled at times, it becomes vital to have starters that go deep into games as the season heads for the dog days of August.

David Price is a stud.  I do not need to expand upon this, do I?

The Cardinals have the pieces and the depth in the system to get a deal like this done.  If Mozeliak is not going to make a move on a deal like this now, then will he?  You can not hold on to your prospects forever and with the depth the Cardinals have, now is the perfect time to deal.

If the Cardinals lose Price via free agency after the 2015 season, they will recoup a first round draft pick.  So while trading prospects like Oscar Taveras and/or Martinez for Price will hurt, the Cardinals will be given a chance to restock should Price choose to walk.

Many fans will still prefer Stanton or Tulowitzki, but it is pitching, especially power pitching, that usually wins out in the playoffs and creating a 1-2 punch with Wainwright and Price could be special and dangerous for not only 2014, but for 2015 as well.

This should be fun to watch as the end of July continues to draw near.  I am not sure whether the Cardinals will acquire Price or not (they should), but I do have a good feeling that some sort of move is coming.  Price should be target No. 1 on the team's radar.
