St. Louis Rams: Re-mocking the Rams draft following round one

The first round of the 2013 NFL Draft is in the books, and the Rams once again showed us that they are willing to move all over the place in the first round to get the guys they want. Ultimately, the team settled on West Virginia wide receiver Tavon Austin and Georgia linebacker Alec Ogletree.

Both players provide excellent athleticism and speed to the Rams on offense and defense respectively and they were both outstanding acquisitions by the Rams.

Now we move on to day two. The Rams had to give up a lot to get Tavon Austin, the most notable of these losses was a second round draft pick. They were able to recoup some of those losses though when they picked up an additional third round pick by trading back with the Falcons later in the draft and then snatching up Ogletree.

There are some rumors around that the Rams could try to trade back up into the second round to acquire a player like an Eddie Lacy at running back or a Jonathan Cyprien at safety, but for now let's just look at the picks the Rams currently have.

Knowing what the Rams have already done in the first round, here is a mock draft of day two and day three for the Rams.

Round 3, Pick 71: Shamarko Thomas, SS, Syracuse

If the Rams are unable to trade up to take Cyprien in the second round, the next best option for them is hard hitting safety Shamarko Thomas from Syracuse. Thomas is the only safety who is known to make a pre-draft visit at Rams Park, and would be an outstanding acquisition to the Rams secondary.

Thomas shows some minor problems in man to man coverage, but he is outstanding against the run which is a big thing you want your safety to be good at. Thomas would fit in great with the Rams and would be an outstanding pickup in the third round.

Round 3, Pick 92: Marcus Lattimore, RB, South Carolina

If he is still available in the late third round, Marcus Lattimore would be the perfect pick for the Rams. Lattimore would have been a sure fire first round pick if not for two devastating knee injuries that he had in college.

The Rams have shown that they are willing to take chances on players with off the field issues, and taking Lattimore would show that they are willing to take the chance on players with a history of past injuries. Normally, I would say not to take a guy who has two significant knee injuries, but Lattimore is too special of a player to pass up on in the third round. This guy is as good as Adrian Foster and Adrian Peterson when he is healthy, and that seems like it is worth the risk in the third round.

Round 4, Pick 113: Bacarri Rambo, FS, Georgia

If the Rams decide to address the strong safety position in the third round of the draft, then Rambo would be a great player to get in the fourth round to fill the free safety position. Much like Thomas, Rambo is very physical in coverage and is very good against defending the run.

Rambo has great ball skills as well and it allows him to gamble a lot in coverage, much like Rams' cornerback Janoris Jenkins tends to do. If the Rams can teach Rambo the proper times to gamble in coverage and the proper times to stay back and let things develop, he could turn into one of the top safeties coming out of this draft class.

Round 5, Pick 149: Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor

It is unlikely that Baylor wide receiver Terrance Williams will slip into the fifth round, but if we have learned anything from past NFL drafts, it is that anything can happen.

The Rams got a dynamic playmaker in Tavon Austin in the first round on Thursday night, but they are still lacking a receiver who can be an every down guy for them. The hope is that Brian Quick will turn into that player for St. Louis, but there is no hurt in adding Williams to the roster as well.

Williams can use his size and speed to go down the field and be a threat in the redzone as well. With guys like Givens and Austin who can stretch the field with their speed, paired with guys like Quick and Williams who can use their size to make plays on the football, the Rams could build up a lethal receiving corps.

Round 6, Pick 184: Tyrann Mathieu, CB, LSU

If there is one team that has shown that they are willing to take risks on players with off the field issues, then it is the St. Louis Rams.

When he is on the field, Mathieu is electric with the football in his hands. He also has unbelievable good ball skills as a cornerback and that allows him to have the ball in his hands extremely often during the course of a game.

The Rams do not have a major need at cornerback, but simply just need some depth, so they could go with a guy like Terry Hawthorne from Illinois to fill their need at the spot. If Mathieu is still on the board in the sixth round or maybe even earlier then that though, then there is no reason that the Rams should not take a chance on him.

Round 6, Pick 192: T.J. Moe, WR, Missouri

The Rams need some depth at defensive tackle, and that would be a good pick here for the Rams, but you guys would much rather read about how Mizzou wide receiver and local kid T.J. Moe could help the Rams.

Moe is one of the biggest sleepers in the draft this year. The Rams already have a guy who can play the slot with Tavon Austin, but getting Moe would allow the Rams to run packages where Austin can stretch the field deep with his great speed, while Moe cuts underneath like a Wes Welker type player.

Moe has tremendous hands and would be an outstanding slot receiver for St. Louis, much like Danny Amendola was during his time with the team.
