It has been a rough 2012 for St. Louis Cardinals first baseman Lance Berkman, who has struggled with what has become a chronic knee injury.

After a visit with his doctor on Monday in Houston, Texas it looks as though Berkman's knee will cause him to miss some more time.

In fact, according to B.J. Rains of FoxSportsMidwest.com, Berkman needs to have season ending knee surgery.

Berkman has played in just 31 games for the Cardinals this season and has just 96 plate appearances, hitting just .263 with a pair of home runs and just seven RBI's.

Berkman speculated before his most recent return from the disabled list that this could be his last season in a Major League Baseball uniform.  With yet another knee operation, his second of 2012, on the docket, Berkman's retirement look more and more likely.

The 36 year old switch-hitter has had an outstanding career, posting a career .296 average with 360 career home runs and 1200 RBI's over 14 seasons.
