Blues New Conference Should Be Named After Brett Hull

On Monday, the NHL announced a radical new alignment of their league, which will create four seperate conferences and cut down on the travel of some Western Conference teams while increasing the travel of some Eastern Conference teams.

The St. Louis Blues will be a part of a conference that will include old time rivals like the Chicago Blackhawks and Detroit Red Wings, new rivals like the Nashville Predators and Minnesota Wild, and will be rounded out with the Dallas Stars, Columbus Blue Jackets, and Winnipeg Jets.

The new NHL alignment should be favorable for Blues fans who believe in rivalries.

USA Today has raised the question as to what the new conferences should be named.  Many believe, even while geographically arranged, that the conferences should be named after former NHL legends.  USA Today throws around names like Wayne Gretzky, Mario Lemieux, and Gordie Howe as players who should have a NHL conference named after them.

But why not name the Blues new conference after Brett Hull?

Hull played for the Blues for parts of 11 seasons, scoring 527 goals as a member of the Blues, the most in franchise history.  His 741 regular season goals in his career are third most in NHL history.

Additionally, Hull won Stanley Cup championships with two other members of the conference.  Hull won a Stanley Cup with Dallas in 1999 and with Detroit in 2002.  Hull clearly made an impact on the history of these two franchises.

Brett is not the only Hull with strong ties to this newly formed conference.  His dad, Bobby Hull, was a Chicago Blackhawks legend and also spent time with the Winnipeg Jets where he earned the nickname the "Goldent Jet."

The Blues new conference should be named after Brett and Bobby Hull.  The Golden Brett's family name has made an impact not only on the Blues organization, but as well as the Dallas Stars, Detroit Red Wings, Chicago Blackhawks and Winnipeg Jets.

The Hull name is entrenched in the history of five of the eight teams in this new conference.

Hull and his family should have the honor of having one of the new NHL conferences named after him.

  1. Bobby Hull also played for the Winnipeg Jets in the WHA, was the first hockey player signed for a million dollars. I agree name it after Bobby.

Gretzky is a lock for the western division
Hull for Central. Has to be Hull.
Lemieux for the division the pens are in

The only tough one is the Montreal/Boston division. Richard or Orr? Or go with someone else?

  2. Thanks Reed for letting me know. I have updated the article accordingly.

I think you go with Bobby Orr in the other division, but Richard would not be a bad choice either.

    Thanks for reading!
