60 Second Rant: Cardinals Should Use "Special" DL For Freese

Prior to the Major League Baseball season began the league instituted a new disabled list that can be used in instances where players suffer from concussions.  Rather than spending a full 15 days on the disabled list if a player needs time to recover from concussion symptoms, teams can opt to put the player on a special 7 day disabled list.

When Cardinals third baseman David Freese suffered a concussion after being hit in the head by a pitch on Thursday night, many thought that the Cardinals may utilize this shortened disabled list.  The club was already short-handed after the five game suspension to Yadier Molina.

Manager Tony La Russa told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that using the seven day disabled list would not be necessary with Freese even though the club has failed to indicate when the corner infielder would be available to return to the lineup.
"I'm not worried about it.  We've won a lot of games over the years shorthanded and we've lost a lot of game when we've had everybody ready."
Once again, the club's roster management is absolutely baffling.

Freese has already missed three games while the Cardinals unnecessarily play with a self-imposed short roster.

Putting Freese on the seven day disabled list would require him to miss just four more games while the Cardinals could call-up reinforcements!

Why not utilize the special seven day disabled list so that the the team is not two players short?

Why not put Freese on this disabled list so that he can fully recover and not rush back from a dangerous injury before he is ready?

Why cripple your bench during a heated pennant race in the month of August?

The Cardinals need every advantage they can get in order to keep up with the red-hot Milwaukee Brewers.  Not putting Freese on the seven day disabled just makes things more difficult.

La Russa is at his best when he has options.  Playing with just three position players, one of which being the back-up catcher, limits the team during end of game match-up situations.

The organization continues to mis-manage its roster when it comes to player injuries.

Somebody needs to hold the organization accountable, especially if it costs the team games and puts players in position to injure themselves further.

Using the seven day disabled list with Freese would be logical especially when Allen Craig is ready to return.  But once again logic does not always prevail with La Russa and the Cardinals.

  1. Makes sense to me that they should use it.

  2. Maybe MLB should create a new "special" DL just for Freese. As often as that kid gets hit and hurt or explodes an ankle running bases, there should be a special rule for him.
