I appreciate that the St. Louis Rams focused on acquiring new weapons for quarterback Sam Bradford in the 2011 NFL Draft.
And I realize that the Rams used their first round pick in the draft to take defensive end Robert Quinn out of North Carolina. I loved the pick.
My question is, why didn't the Rams try to bulk up a defense that has multiple holes, especially after using the first pick on a defensive end? If you can't get A.J. Green or Julio Jones, why not make the defense the focus of this team? Why not build on that first round selection and bulk up a defense that ranked 14th in total team defense last year?
Did Billy Devaney forget that O.J. Atogwe is gone? Did he forget that Ron Bartell needs help at cornerback? Did he forget that Fred Robbins is old? Does he expect James Laurinaitis to make every single tackle on the field?
Austin Pettis and Gregory Salas are nice receivers. They are modestly tall and are not very fast, but were very productive at the college level.
Sounds an awful lot like Danario Alexander, Donnie Avery and Danny Amendola, all of which are already on the Rams roster.
So does general manager Billy Devaney feel that quantity equals better quality? If he does, he needs to check his math.
So, the Rams took some "decent" wide receivers and a tight end while leaving gaping holes at defensive tackle, outside linebacker, cornerback, and safety.
Here is the point. They made themselves deeper, that is for sure. But the Rams didn't make themselves better in this draft.
They did not get a superstar to catch passes from Bradford. They didn't get a running back to support Steven Jackson in the back field. And they left their defense, an actual strength of the team in 2011, out to dry.
I think it will be great for Rams fans to watch Sam Bradford dink and dump passes to Lance Kendricks and Brandon Gibson.
That is, of course, if the defense can get him on the field.

They don't need a superstar at wideout, nor did they have much difficulty marching up and down the field as their frequency in the red zone proved... It's finishing, scoring touchdowns, which is what the sure handed, sizable and physical pass catchers just drafted addresses... Or didn't you watch the games?
ReplyDeletePettis is listed by NFL as 6'3" and has some of the best hands you'll ever see... Red zone beast.
ReplyDeleteAnonymous is dead on. Danario Alexander, Donnie Avery and Danny Amendola...teeny tiny or injured often. Avery had plenty speed.
ReplyDeleteFree agency is still coming and a better D-line makes the whole D work better. I'm quite pleased.
